Moms, track and monsters

This past Sunday was Mother’s Day, so I wanted to tak a moment to thank a very special lady in my life, my Mom.

We haven’t always seen eye-to-eye on everything (partially because I’m so tall and she is vertically challenged), but I know she has always had my best interest at heart.

Growing up, she was always there for my brother and I, ending long shifts at the hospital to drive us to our various activities, make sure we had clothes on our backs and cheer louder than anyone in the crowd at all of our sporting events.

She was, indeed, “the cool mom.” Everyone knew they could turn to Mrs. B and everyone was welcome in our home.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to go on and on with the mooshy stuff. I’ll just end this by saying thank you for 33-years of love and support, Mom. I know I don’t act like it all of the time, but it means the world to me.

And I know for a fact she’ll see this message because, even though she lives up in Parker, she subscribes to this here paper. See? All these years and she’s still supporting her “baby boy.”

Well, it looks like Fountain Hills High School has another state championship on its hands.

The local girls track squad this past weekend went on to claim first place, amassing enough team points over the two day season-ending state meet to soar higher than any of their opponents.

This is the first time in school history that the girls track team has pulled off such a feat, and I’m sure that “State Champions – 2016” will look fantastic on that banner hanging in the high school gym.

Congratulations to our local ladies for aiming so high and then putting in the hard work necessary to achieve your lofty goals. You’ve represented yourselves, your school and your community well, and we appreciate all you’ve done to once again put Fountain Hills on the map.

You may have noticed over the past few weeks that we’ve been running stories about an upcoming event, Mad Monster Arizona.

I know that not everybody shares my enthusiasm for sci-fi and horror, so just believe me when I say that this is a pretty big deal to have this event and dozens of celebrities coming to We-Ko-Pa this Friday through Sunday, May 12-15.

We have to give kudos to the folks at We-Ko-Pa who have worked so hard to attract events like Mad Monster to the area, as there will be literally thousands of visitors coming out for the event. Even if you don’t appreciate Night of the Living Dead, Star Trek or the Friday the 13th franchise, you can’t really argue with the perks of having so many folks stay in local motels, eat at local restaurants, gas up the car and visit local attractions during an event like this.

Just remember that the horror and sci-fi crowd like to have fun and get dressed up for these types of events, so don’t be too shocked if you find yourself eating dinner this weekend next to a table occupied by Freddy, Jason or a family of zombies.
