The John O’Flynn Senior Activity Center will host the Phoenix Art Museum with special presentations at the Community Center on Wednesday, Aug. 6 and Aug. 27, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
A synopsis of the programs is as follows:
Treasures of the Hermitage, Part I, led by docent Phillip Felker is the Aug. 6 program.
This is a presentation of selected masterworks from the vast collection of The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. The meager origins of the collection will be discussed along with the guidance that expanded the collection and charted the path to what it is today.
The selections have been grouped by sub-topics to better provide a cross section of the artists and masterworks. Artists include Rembrandt, Lucas Cranach, Gauguin, Rubens, Matisse, Pieter Pietersz Lastman, Raphael, Ruisdael, Van Gogh, among others.
After a brief introduction, Felker will discuss The Hermitage: Paradox and Dinosaur; Golden Ages: Paradise Lost; The Art of Faith: The Bible and Saints; and Territorial Imperatives: Land, Sea and Cityscapes.
In order to do justice to these topics, it was necessary to save the additional topics for a subsequent presentation.
Treasures of the Hermitage, Part II, led by docent Phillip Felker is Wednesday, Aug. 27.
This is a continuation of a presentation of selected masterworks from the vast collection of The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Following a brief reprise to reset the scene, Felker will review additional paintings grouped by sub-topics to continue a cross section of artists and masterworks. Artists in this part include Janssens Elinga, Bouwer, Manfredi, Picasso, Rubens, Hals, Jordeans, Titian, Cuyp, Berchem, Van Huijsum, and Salgado among others.
These presentations are free for Activity Center members and $5 for non-members. Pre-registration required, refer to Course #1077 for the Aug. 6 presentation and Course #1078 for the Aug. 27 presentation.
