A total of 25 new members will be inducted into the National Honor Society on Monday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in the Fountain Hills High School lecture hall.
The NHS, established in 1921, is a national recognition program for high school students who show achievement in scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
Four main purposes have guided chapters of NHS from the beginning: To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.
Candidates must meet stringent requirements for scholarship, service, leadership and character in order to be selected for membership. NHS membership is considered a high honor.
NHS members participate in numerous service activities including organizing the school food drive, ushering at school events, manning the high school’s Homework Hub Tutoring Center, and teaching younger students at the Boys and Girls Club.
The selection process was open earlier this year to tenth and eleventh grade students with a weighted 3.5 or higher GPA. Potential members next had to fill out the membership application to be included in the competitive judging process.
The final part of the process involved 6-8 judges who, without knowing the student’s identity, assessed the student in the categories of scholarship, leadership, character, and community service.
That process has finally concluded with 25 new members set to be inducted into the group later this month. At the event, Principal Tom Brennan and teacher Claire McWilliams will be the guest speakers, and all community members interested in celebrating the following students’ achievements are invited to attend.
This year’s new NHS members include Brandon Barth, Aurora Beans, Maggie Berry, Maddie Briguglio, Allison Brown, Paul Bryniarski, Julia Burgess, Samantha Ferrato, Maia Garcia, Tessa Halverson, Danielle Hinni and Taylor James.
Sierra Jarriel and John Kelly will also be inducted, along with Sara Koroli, Jake McAuliff, Sienna Mueller, Kaylee Nelson, Dagny Paulsen, Griffin Peters, Katy Petkus, Cameron Ribail, Andrew Szwiec, Joshua Vaught and Brooke Yost.
