The public is invited to recognize former Fountain Hills Mayor Wally Nichols with the dedication in his honor of a plaza on the Avenue of the Fountains this Saturday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m.
A ceremony and unveiling will be held near the intersection of Verde River Drive and Avenue of the Fountains. Speakers will include Mayor Ginny Dickey and several others.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled and thankful to the Town Council and town government for this wonderful honor for my husband,” said Sheila Nichols. “Wally dearly loved this community and so many shared in their affection and love for my husband. He took his job as mayor very seriously and gave his all to assist in making Fountain Hills a shining light on the hill.”
Mayor Nichols served as mayor from 2003 to 2008 during some very difficult financial times for the town. Mayor Nichols led the Town Council and town employees on a path towards financial success. He is the second longest-serving mayor, completing five years. He was re-elected in two elections without a challenge.
Mayor Nichols was a leader in long term strategic and financial planning, annexation of State Trust Land into Fountain Hills, addition of amenities to Desert Vista Park, Fountain Park and the Avenue of the Fountains and completion of the Town Hall. Near and dear to Wally’s heart was the Boys and Girls Club and he was instrumental in getting a Boys and Girls Club built in Fountain Hills.
As mayor, Nichols’ greatest accomplishments were strategic, quiet and anonymous. He worked tirelessly “behind the scenes” to make Fountain Hills the best town it could be.
In honor of his service and dedication to the Town of Fountain Hills, a portion of the Avenue of the Fountain Plaza will be named “Nichols Plaza.”
The public is invited to join in celebrating Mayor Nichols many contributions to the town at the plaza dedication ceremony.
“This will be a very special time together as we remember my dear friend and mentor,” said former Mayor Jay Schlum.
