On Tuesday, Nov. 15, the parents of a Fountain Hills Middle School student reported finding a disturbing message on an eighth grade chat site.
According to a Sheriff’s Office report, what appeared to be a normal discussion regarding class work turned into a potential threat of violence.
MCSO told school officials that although the message was highly inappropriate they do not think the student was a viable threat.
There were no arrests and no charges by law enforcement related to the incident.
According to Anita Gomez, Four Peaks Elementary and Fountain Hills Middle School principal, two students were suspended pending further investigation by school officials.
On Monday, November 21, the FHMS Threat Assessment Team, comprised of eight staff members, met to discuss and evaluate the facts of the incident using the district’s Threat Assessment Protocol, Gomez said in an email statement to The Times.
The conclusion of the team is that the student “did not pose a viable threat” to the school. Appropriate school-based disciplinary consequences were administered given the specific facts of this incident.
“It is very important that parents reiterate with their children that jokes about school violence and school shootings are inappropriate,” Gomez said. “Safety is our number one priority and we will remain vigilante to ensure all students are safe on all of our campuses.
“To that end, it is critical that anyone aware of dangerous actions or threats of dangerous actions make the administration and law enforcement aware of them immediately.”
