No turn on red

In an opinion letter, Jeffrey Burch stated, “If we are not going to enforce the no turn on red at Palisades and Shea, then let’s get rid of it.”

The signs do not say “No Turn on Red,” they say “Right Turn on Green Arrow Only.”

In the past several years, I asked the town about the wording and the town said that is what someone said had to be put up. The town said that because there are arrow lights, then that is why the signs say “Right Turn on Green Arrow Only.”

Doesn’t make any sense to me if the indicator is an arrow, oval or even square, red is red. Drivers are looking for the “No Turn on Red” and not what is posted.

ADOT doesn’t have the green arrow sign in their Arizona Manual of Approved Signs list. So, maybe a person cannot even be cited if they turn on the red with the current signs as posted? Law enforcement would have to answer to that issue.
