The Noon Kiwanis Club will be well represented at Saturday’s Make a Difference Day.
Local efforts on this nationwide day of service are being organized by the Town of Fountain Hills and a group of citizen volunteers.
Noon Kiwanians Paul Appeldorn, Tom Lawrence and Jo Nelson are assisting Heather Ware, the town’s volunteer coordinator, on this committee.
Noon Kiwanis President Mike Scharnow and President-Elect Al Roselieb are coordinating that club’s contingent to be volunteering Saturday.
“This is a spectacular town-wide volunteer effort, and as Kiwanians we’re proud to be helping out,” Scharnow said.
“We appreciate the town putting something like this together and showing people what volunteerism is all about in a small community like ours.”
A group of Noon Kiwanians Oct. 15 traveled to the Ronald McDonald House (Cambridge facility) to serve dinner to families who are staying there.
This service project has turned into a popular activity for the club, since they provide dinner to families who have children in the hospital with major medical issues.
Besides Roselieb, others who made the trip and provided foodstuffs were Paul Appeldorn, Tom Campbell, Pat Costa, Charlie Fox, Jon Geller, Deacon John Les Callett, Jo Nelson and Don Williams.
“This charitable kindness brought smiles and joy to many families experiencing the harsh realities of serious medical procedures and treatments,” Roselieb said.
“Some families even came after we left and enjoyed the fruits of our labors after hours.
“Once again our club has provided a blessing to families with obvious physical and emotional needs.”
The club also is gearing to man a fundraising concession stand at Halloween on the Hills Thursday, Oct. 31.
The group will have burgers, hot dogs, refreshments and other items available at Avenue of the Fountains and Verde River Drive.
The famous adobe-style food trailer belonging to the Noon Kiwanis Club also will be open for business at the Fountain Festival of Arts and Crafts, Nov. 8-10.
The familiar brown trailer will be situated once again at the Avenue and Saguaro Blvd.
“These fundraisers enable us to fund certain outreach projects and offer our junior Kiwanis clubs to local students,” Scharnow said.
“One of our goals in Kiwanis is to train young people with leadership skills and show them the importance of community service and reaching out to others.”
The Kiwanis International motto is “serving the children of the world.”

The group’s next luncheon meeting is Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Kiwanis Activity Center.
Anyone interested in Kiwanis is welcome to attend and enjoy a free lunch.
