Noon Kiwanis stays active

Posted

It might be hot outside, but the heat hasn’t deterred the Noon Kiwanis Club from being active.

A club contingent traveled to the Cambridge Ronald McDonald House in Phoenix Sunday, June 9, to serve home-cooked meals to families.

The facility, adjacent to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, houses families who have children going through extensive medical testing and treatment.

This follows an April trip to the larger Roanoke Ronald McDonald House to serve dinner.

“These families are always so appreciative of our efforts,” said Al Roselieb, club vice president in charge of service projects.

“And it provides our members the opportunity to visit with the families and hear their stories, offer some encouragement.”

April participants included Paul Appeldorn, John and Ranee LesCallett, Tom Campbell, Ed Cohen, Pat Costa, Charlie and Margo Fox, Jon Geller and Roselieb.

The Noon Kiwanis Club also organized a trip to Helen’s Hope Chest in Mesa in late May to assist that organization with hands-on volunteerism.

The group sorted clothing and helped assemble a large chest of drawers from IKEA.

Participants included Gail Appeldorn, Jon Geller, Phyllis Horan, Jo Nelson, Hope Ann and John Pizzicaroli, Betty Pantuso and Roselieb.

Helen’s Hope Chest provides free “shopping” opportunities for foster children to visit and pick out clothes, school supplies, toys and other needed items.

A fairly large club contingent met April 20 to volunteer their time at Extended Hands Food Bank.

They spent several hours sorting food and bagging boxes and boxes of breakfast cereal for families.

They also assembled food boxes to be given away to families.

“The Kiwanis motto is ‘serving the children of the world,’ and we’ve given financially to the food bank for many years,” Roselieb said.

“But this was the first time in a long, long time that our club provided some hands-on time at the facility. We had fun doing this type of service.”

The club also is organizing yet another visit to the Phoenix Rescue Mission on Wednesday, June 26, to serve lunch to the homeless.

The mission, located on 35th Avenue in Phoenix, prepares the meal, but volunteers typically dish out the menu items to mostly homeless men.

“We have established a good working relationship with the mission, and this hands-on effort is a good way to serve someone in need,” said Mike Scharnow, club president-elect.

The club also is currently collecting cases of water to be delivered to the Phoenix Rescue Mission.

“We’ve donated more than 100 cases each of the past two summers, but this year we’ve set a goal of 150 cases,” Scharnow said.

The club also will man a concession stand at the July 4 event to be held at Fountain Park.

The menu will be similar to last year’s -- pretzels, popcorn, sno cones and cotton candy.

The Noon Kiwanis Club has altered its meeting schedule for the summer months. Its next luncheon will be held Thursday, July 18, at the Fountain Hills Community Center at 12 noon.
