The Noon Kiwanis Club has kept a relatively low profile this summer, but that doesn’t mean its service projects have slowed down.
“We’ve kept up a steady diet of projects this summer to keep those members busy who stick out the hot months,” said club President Mike Scharnow. “And we help a lot of different people at the same time.”
Two community blood drives were conducted this summer, along with several visits to the Ronald McDonald House, helping at Extended Hands Food Bank and attending a Kiwanis convention in Albuquerque, N.M.

Noon Kiwanis wraps up quiet, yet busy summer

The Noon Kiwanis Club has kept a relatively low profile this summer, but that doesn’t mean its service projects have slowed down.
“We’ve kept up a steady diet of projects this summer to keep those members busy who stick out the hot months,” said club President Mike Scharnow. “And we help a lot of different people at the same time.”
Two community blood drives were conducted this summer, along with several visits to the Ronald McDonald House, helping at Extended Hands Food Bank and attending a Kiwanis convention in Albuquerque, N.M.
During the past several months the club also has doled out a variety of grants and scholarships – $3000 to graduating high school seniors, $500 to the musical instrument fund at the high school, $1000 to the food bank, $500 to Fountain Hills Youth Theater and $1000 to the McKee Branch of the Greater Scottsdale Boys and Girls Club.
The Kiwanis Aktion Club, which consists of developmentally disabled adults associated with Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Services, also continued its service through the summer months.
That club regularly helps out at Ronald McDonald House and Feed My Starving Children.
“Sure, things slow down a little bit over summer and some of our members go back East or take lengthy vacations,” said Scharnow. “But we kept meeting on a regular basis over summer and we kept up our commitment to service and serving the children of the world.
“We have grown to embrace hands-on service, but we do still help out some folks financially.
“Those monies are primarily directed to children and youth-oriented programs and activities.”
The Noon Kiwanis Club will next meet Thursday, Sept. 1, at 12 noon at the Kiwanis Activity Center.
Visitors are always welcome to stop by, enjoy a free lunch and learn more about the club.
