North Chapel pastor aims to make church fun again

Pastor Robert (Bobby) Brewer has served at several megachurches – 12 years at Scottsdale Bible Church and 10 years at Hillsong Phoenix – where membership numbers thousands.

He prefers to lead in smaller churches, such as his newest assignment of lead pastor at North Chapel, 17210 Amhurst Dr., a non-denominational congregation. Recent services have been averaging about 45 members.

Last summer, in a conversation with his father, Brewer said he wouldn’t mind pastoring a little country church one day.

“Sure enough, here it is, but it is in Fountain Hills,” said Brewer.

Former members of Scottsdale Bible founded North Chapel. In its early years, services were held at Messinger Mortuary.

“I pretty much teach straight out of the Bible,” Brewer said, believing that “the Bible is the inspired word of God.”

“There’s not a lot of bells and whistles here but if you want to learn the Bible and how to apply it to your life in a community of friends who are trying to make the community and world a better place, I think you would be pretty happy with North Chapel,” said Brewer.

He describes the environment as “church done simply. It’s worship and teaching from the Bible and fellowship.”

Brewer and his wife of 24 years, Kristen, a Southwest Airlines flight attendant, have lived in town since 1994. They have an 18-year-old cat.

For about a year, Brewer assisted actor Stephen Baldwin in organizing an extreme sports ministry, Global Breakthrough Ministry. Brewer said Baldwin became a “follower of Jesus” after the 9/11 World Trade Center attack.

He was born in Japan where his father, a Navy career man, was stationed. Brewer jokes that if he were ever to get a tattoo, he would select “Made in Japan.”

His early childhood years were spent in San Diego and Virginia Beach. He obtained a master’s in religion theology from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in Virginia, and a doctorate of ministry from Phoenix Seminary.

He wrote a couple of books, Postmodernism: What You Should Know and Do About it and Help! I’m Really Single.

Brewer is the host of a radio show at 3 p.m., Sundays, on AM 1360 KPXQ of Salem Broadcasting.

“It’s my goal that North Chapel becomes a blessing to the community. One of my goals is to make church fun again. When you come here, you’ll probably laugh, have good times and meet a lot of friendly people.”

The Sunday service is at 9:30 a.m. Visit the church website at Northchapel.net.
