Two years ago my wife and I arrived from Wisconsin to consider a permanent relocation to Arizona. As we looked at options in metro Phoenix the great appeal of Fountain Hills was an important factor in our eventual affirmative decision.
Boe James’ recent letter lists many benefits we have come to appreciate. And don’t ever doubt the importance of the wonderful dog park. Our new home was built in Fountain Hills’ early years. We anticipated the need to address various maintenance and repair issues that one would expect with the passage of time.
In a similar vein, the community’s infrastructure shows clear signs of having been in place for decades. (Kudos to the officials who provided the leadership needed to accomplish the reconstruction of Saguaro Boulevard.)

As I see it, there is a clear bargain between individual residents and the community’s leadership. We’ll take care of our property and the town will reciprocate by providing a modern array of basic services and facilities.
If the town doesn’t hold up its end of the deal the adverse impact on homeowners and the value of their property will soon be felt. Current town revenue clearly is insufficient for the town to deliver a modern and well-maintained infrastructure. Elected officials and the town’s professional staff have done a good job given the apparent limitations. They now need to educate all citizens about the gap between needs and available dollars.
At that point it will be back in the hands of Fountain Hills’ residents to decide. The outcome will determine the course of the community’s future.
