On a recent Saturday morning the Hoffman family headed out to the Fountain Hills McDowell Sonoran Preserve for a hike, taking along their young German Shepherd, Nani, for her exercise.
“Nani, bounded ahead, seemingly motivated by an irresistible scent” Janelle Hoffman said. “(She is) trail-trained but young, this morning, she was driven by something primal, and all her training of the last year failed her.”
Nani vanished into the desert, her owner and dog companion could only watch, powerless to dissuade her in her pursuit. Even her E-collar did not deter her flight.
