Park's Clark retiring from town

Don Clark is wrapping up his career of more than 20 years with Fountain Hills Parks and Recreation as he takes his retirement from the town at the end of this week.

Clark recalls starting as the Parks Lead at Golden Eagle Park in November of 1995. That was the town’s signature park at the time and Clark oversaw additional phases of construction before the facility was completed.

Clark is leaving as Supervisor of Parks, the man who oversees the maintenance and operations of the town’s outdoor park facilities. He has been managing all local parks for 15 years.

He did an interim stint as co-director during a search to replace the town’s first Parks and Recreation director, Robin Goodman.

In addition to his supervision at Golden Eagle Park, Clark has been on hand for construction and expansion at all the park sites, including Fountain Park, Four Peaks Park and Desert Vista Park.

“This has been a great experience for me,” Clark said.

“I have learned a lot from Mark Mayer (current Community Services director) and Bryan Hughes (former recreation supervisor for the town).

“I’ve gained a lot of skills, particularly with computers and technology.”

Clark said he is truly amazed by the volunteer support the town gets from residents.

“They have helped the town function and saved a lot of money,” he said.

Clark came out of Northern Arizona University with an interest in working in telecommunications and broadcasting. However, there were no jobs in the field to be found at the time and he began working with a landscaping company.

His employer contracted for some work at Golden Eagle Park and the town hired him away from that company.

Clark says he has thoroughly enjoyed the job and the people he has worked with over the years. He must, as he makes a one-way drive of 35 to 40 miles every day to come to work.

Clark says he is not quite ready to retire, but a family situation has prompted him to take some time to help his aging mother. He says he expects to be back in the job market by the end of the year, but closer to his home in Phoenix.

The town will recognize Clark and his service in the community at a reception hosted by the Community Services Department on Thursday, Feb. 4, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the lobby at Town Hall. Light refreshments will be served.

Following the reception, Clark will be recognized by the Town Council during its regular session that will begin in council chambers at 6:30 p.m.

The public is invited to attend the reception and council meeting to recognize and thank Don for his 20 years with the town.
