A recent letter to the editor titled “Cart/Horse” proposed taxes as a needed precursor to increased services. While this may be true, there is an alternative: A well-coordinated volunteer group with duties including patrol, observation and reporting; similar to a neighborhood watch group but perhaps mobile and remote.
Even a combination of this volunteer group, coupled with a very, very low tax increase, would be better than the outright hiring and cost involved with additional LEO personnel. Either way, a careful analysis should be performed and presented. This should reflect the total cost for additional personnel and capture salary, medical and retirement projections.
