Pearl Harbor commemoration held at Fountain Park

Former State Senator speaks at 82nd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor

Flags were at half-mast Saturday, Dec. 7, as community members gathered at the Veterans Memorial in Fountain Hills to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

A total of 2,403 American servicemen and 68 civilians were killed in the attack on December 7, 1941, an event that spurred President Franklin D. Roosevelt to declare war on Japan the following day, effectively bringing the United States into World War II.

Two U.S. Navy ships were permanently lost in the attack, including the USS Arizona and the USS Oklahoma.
