Planning and Zoning recommends approval for downtown overlay

Council consideration set for December

The Fountain Hills Planning and Zoning Commission has voted 5-1 to recommend the town council approve a downtown overlay for the zoning map. Commissioner Phil Sveum cast the dissenting vote and Commissioner Nick Procter was absent.

The action would remove the existing overlay map and replace it with a new plan for the downtown area bounded by Saguaro Boulevard, Avenue of the Fountains and La Montana Drive. It replaces an overlay that only went as far north as Palisades Boulevard.

The overlay creates three districts within the downtown area, including the Avenue District on the north side of Avenue of the Fountains and along Verde River Drive as far as Parkview Avenue. The Business District is to include the area between the Avenue District and Palisades Boulevard. The new Innovation District would include the area between Palisades Boulevard and La Montana Drive to the north.
