If filibuster debate about strict gun laws now fulminates into action, here are a few suggestions I submit: Fingerprinting the buyer, annual registration for owners, DUI checks and background searches for other mental health problems and criminal records.

There should be more restrictions on the type of weapons permitted for protection or employment-related purposes. Rifles designated for animal hunting should be included. Required safety inspections on a rotating schedule might help avoid “accidental discharge.”

Will this stop murders of passion or those under the influence of drugs and alcohol? Probably it will take time to ferret out illegal weapons and initiate strict gun control enforcement by weapons dealers. However, it is better than the candy store of guns Arizona now operates for salves to anyone with the price.

Legalizing hallucinatory drugs is an opposition law against strict gun control. Drugs create havoc with those who are civilized and in good mental health.

So where do we go from here? Maybe marshmallow bullets to just send a message of blind anger, but don’t hurt anyone, of course.

Was it Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet and philosopher, who said “genius is common sense wrapped in working clothes?” Where did our genius go? Will it ever return? Some Bibles recommend turning swords into plowshares. Did we forget what a plowshare represents?
