Point/counterpoint: Fowl ordinance in Fountain Hills

Posted

Dean Hughson

Fountain Hills is now allowing residents to have six hens. As an eggman for 45 years, I believe some of our council failed to research chickens.

In commercial operations we keep chickens alive with fans or AC. If you let the birds out, they face snakes, bobcats, hawks, but mostly they face death from the heat. A chicken produces 90 pounds of manure a year and your neighbors will complain.

I urge the Council to reconsider.

Councilmember Brenda Kalivianakis

The Arizona legislator passed the fowl law and it was signed into law by the governor. The council was just codifying the state law, we literally had no choice.

Unfortunately, the state government has been passing more and more laws that preempt local governance.

Your points are all well taken but unfortunately, our hands were tied.
