OPINION — In many parts of our great country, fall is the time when rich colors abound. Here in Fountain Hills and elsewhere in the greater Phoenix area, yard signs during election periods provide that rich color change to the scenery.
I appreciate the "yard signs" in and along residential areas (not so much at major street intersections), as that shows citizen involvement in our governmental activities. I would ask all residents to note the yard signs that voters have put in their yards, but to also remember that those yard signs are on private property and to leave them alone.
The proliferation of yard signs is a signal that our First Amendment right of free expression is still being exercised by engaged citizenry. I would love, without regard to party or candidate, to see more small yard signs in front and side yards along streets throughout the town, especially in HOAs which legally cannot prohibit them, even if their rules prohibit them (state statutes override HOA rules). But as much as I like to see yard signs, I also like to see those for candidates who are not moving from the primary to the General Election removed in a timely manner after the primary.
