National popular vote. Sounds good, nothing but bad for a minority state like Arizona and the Nation as well. Please petition all State Legislators to vote “No” on House bill 2456 and Senate Bill 1218.
The Electoral College was established to provide some protection for smaller states against being completely overrun by larger ones. The NPV movement is an orchestrated end run around that protection and, more importantly, opens our presidential election process to some serious unintended consequences.
For the President to be elected, he or she must obtain an “absolute majority” of the votes in the Electoral College. That number is 270 out of 538. If no candidate acquires that number, the election is forwarded to Congress for determination.

The NPV bill provides for a contractual accumulation of 270 or more Electoral votes between member states that are legally obligated to any candidate who receives the “largest number” of popular votes in an election.
Under these circumstances, consider: In a three-party race, a candidate receiving 33 percent , plus one of the popular vote, could be automatically awarded 270 Electoral votes and become President!
If Arizona becomes a member of NPV and 90 percent of our citizens vote for Candidate A, our 11 Electoral votes would be cast for Candidate B if (he/she) had acquired 50 percent, plus one of the nationally calculated “Dangling Chad” votes.
In our nation’s 200-plus year history there have been just four elections that failed to produce clear, uncontested results and those were appropriately, peacefully and quickly resolved. NPV is a politically motivated solution in search of a problem that does not exist. Kill it now.
