Post office access to be restricted by construction
A contractor is scheduled to begin work next week on modifications to the access to the post office off Avenue of the Fountains.
The project will expand the median break to two lanes to allow both eastbound and westbound traffic to exit the west end of the post office parking lot. Currently the median break has only one lane to allow westbound traffic to cross and enter the parking lot.
During construction, which is expected to last about two weeks, westbound traffic on the Avenue will be directed about 200 feet west to another median break to turn back to the post office. This construction activity should have no impact on traffic at the La Montana Drive intersection.

This modification is a component of a larger plan for the Avenue of the Fountains/La Montana Drive intersection that currently includes a roundabout. There is no timetable for additional work on the Avenue at this time.
Public Works Director Justin Weldy said the decision was made to go forward with this part of the project because it will be helpful whether additional work on the Avenue is done or not. He said the expansion of the median break to two lanes should eliminate any post office traffic making a U-turn on the Avenue at the intersection with La Montana Drive.
Staff will be providing the Town Council with an update on plans for the potential roundabout and closure of the median at Verde River Drive when the council meets on Tuesday, May 21, at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Town Hall.
