Predawn cantata

Just after the first light separates the sky from the earth, a beautiful cantata erupts from the stealthy silence that filled Quail Ridge Wash. Sung by a large choir of coyotes it shatters that silence with joyful music. This cantata sounds like a celebration of the end of a night of prowling their territory in search of sustenance and adventure. Ahead lies a day of sleep and rest in their well- hidden dens.

When the sun reveals the location where it will appear at this time of year the coyote choir ceases vocalizing. And the mourning doves take over. Their music is softer, soothing and devoutly praises the source of all life on earth. The star that is our sun.

One needs to awaken before first light to hear this music, and this I do each and every new day. It is all the inspiration my life needs. Indeed, it overflows.
