Principal Gomez resigns

Four Peaks Elementary School and Fountain Hills Middle School Principal Anita Gomez has announced she will be resigning from her role within the Fountain Hills Unified School District at the end of the current academic year in June.

In a statement to local parents, Gomez said she has decided to “wave a surrender flag” concerning her two-hour commute from Anthem each day after 11 years with FHUSD.

“It is difficult to say goodbye, but I have eight more weeks to enjoy the many exciting things we have planned at school,” Gomez said. “I am confident that my replacement will be supportive of our teachers, staff and students and take the school to a new level of success.”

When asked what originally brought Gomez to Fountain Hills, she said she was lured by the incredible middle school campus. As a part of the district, she said she’s watched FHUSD do more with less.

“FHUSD has done a better job than other district keeping quality programs and services for students with an ever-shrinking budget,” she said. “In spite of having less state funding to work with each year, the district managed to put students first.”

Gomez said she’s enjoyed a fantastic staff and wonderful students over the years. Looking back, she said one memory in particular stands out.

“I won an Outstanding Principal award from the Arizona Art Teachers’ Association and felt proud to be recognized for the great things our school does to promote a love and appreciation for art of all kinds,” Gomez added. “I’m proud seeing my staff through many changes and being their support and lead cheerleader.”

After more than a decade of making the long haul from Anthem, Gomez said it was simply time to begin working in her own community.

“I spend 40 hours a month in my car,” she said. “My own kids are getting older and they need me.”

At the moment, Gomez said she is leaning toward teaching middle school math.

“Two weeks ago, I taught a class when Mrs. Kelly’s substitute teacher needed help and I loved it,” she continued. “Being around kids and helping them learn about graphing linear equations that day brought me the most joy that I’ve felt in a long time. I miss that.”

Gomez said she went into education because of the satisfaction she feels when a student has managed to master a lesson and feel good about themselves as a learner.

“It’s the best feeling in the world,” Gomez said. “Being a principal is fun, but I’ve missed having students who were truly my own in a classroom where all the action happens.

“My teachers know I love them. My students know I think highly of their accomplishments and spirit. I wish them happiness and success.”
