The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing and consider a special-use permit to allow Arizona Propane to install a 6,000-gallon propane tank at a Shea Boulevard plaza.
Arizona Propane has moved into offices at 17251 E. Shea Boulevard, and the request would allow the company to install a 12-foot diameter tank to accommodate retail gas sales.
The property where the tank would be installed is currently vacant, but an adjacent existing building that was formerly a drive-through coffee kiosk would be used as a pay station.

Propane tank on P&Z agenda

The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing and consider a special-use permit to allow Arizona Propane to install a 6,000-gallon propane tank at a Shea Boulevard plaza.
Arizona Propane has moved into offices at 17251 E. Shea Boulevard, and the request would allow the company to install a 12-foot diameter tank to accommodate retail gas sales.
The property where the tank would be installed is currently vacant, but an adjacent existing building that was formerly a drive-through coffee kiosk would be used as a pay station.
The tank itself is to be installed within a secure walled structure.
Staff is stipulating that additional landscaping be installed on site as well.
In his staff report to the commission, Senior Planner Bob Rodgers states that there is no zoning for the town that specifically allows for retail propane sales.
However, he said it is very similar to gasoline sales and believes it is appropriate to use the same special use permit process required for gasoline sales.
The area proposed for the tank is zoned C-1, neighborhood commercial.
The Fountain Hills Fire Department is asking that an optically operated, motorized access gate be installed at the far east end of Firebrick Drive where it enters the plaza parking lot where the tank is to be installed.
Fire Marshal Dave Ott is also specifying that the construction comply with 2012 International Fire Code and 2014 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
The Planning and Zoning Commission meets Thursday, April 24, at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at Town Hall. The session is open to the public.
