Public art

Sylvia Parcyzn, you poor unhappy lady.

Sylvia has written a very ugly letter, complaining that the Public Art Committee has dedicated its latest sculpture, “Fred and Ginger” by Pat Mack, in honor of Walter and Betty Martin.

These are the two generous individuals whose donation made the purchase of this piece possible. She is unhappy that she doesn’t know Walter and Betty.

Sylvia, that’s the way it is done.

The Public Art Committee, chaired by Sandi Thompson, maintains a “wish book” of works of art it would like to acquire. From time to time we receive calls from individuals who would like to recognize an anniversary, or a loved one, or a special event.

Sandi walks them through the wish book, and if they see something they like, we try to find out if they are in a position to make a donation sufficient to purchase the work.

You probably didn’t know my mother, but in 2001 Jackie and I purchased “Precious Cargo” in her honor. Tom and Tina Duffy purchased “Potato Man” in 2008 in honor of his Irish father. And so it goes.

Sylvia, most of the time you won’t know the person who is going to be honored by these gifts. But the town will benefit by having another work of art added to our very extensive collection. Check out our website: fountainhillspublicart.com.

The wish book is on there.

The Public Art Committee is proud of “Fred and Ginger” and we are proud of Walter and Betty Martin. They have lived long and fruitful lives and we are blessed by their generosity.

Sylvia, perhaps someone will decide to give a sculpture in your honor.
