I applaud Vice Mayor Dennis Brown and Councilmen Cecil Yates and Alan Magazine for their courage and foresight in discussing a potential public safety fee.
Our town must develop a plan for dealing with future budget deficits while also ensuring that our fire, EMS and law enforcement services stay strong.
Town staff continues to do more with less as budgets have been shrinking, and there is very little potential for further spending cuts.
The only alternative is to develop a source of additional revenue for our most vital services. A public safety fee that applies to all home and business owners could be an equitable approach.
