P&Z recommends approval of extended dispensary hours
The Planning and Zoning Commission is recommending that Nature's AZ Medicines be allowed to extend its hours for the medical marijuana dispensary in Fountain Hills.
The commission voted 5-0 on Thursday evening to recommend amending the Zoning Ordinance to allow the dispensary to operate between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The applicant had asked for a change to allow operation from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.
Members of the Fountain Hills Coalition voiced their concerns about the extended hours creating an environment for increased accessibility for young people. They also noted the proposed operating hours would occur after dark much of the year.

Mark Steinmentz, who has the license for Nature's AZ Medicines, said it is vital that patients have access to the medical marijuana when they need it.
Commissioner Gene Slechta pointed to the "purpose" of the Zoning Ordinance, which cites "promote the public health, peace, safety, comfort, convenience and general welfare of the citizens."
Slechta said he believes the request is consistent with the goals of the ordinance.
The Town Council is scheduled to hear the request Thursday, March 20.
