Quake rattles FH, Verdes along with Valley
Posted
Residents in Fountain Hills and the Verde Communities were among the many across the Valley who reported being shaken by a series of earthquakes late Sunday night.
Three incidents were reported by the U.S. Geological Survey beginning at around 9 p.m. Nov. 1. All were centered around Black Canyon City about 50 miles north of Phoenix.
The first was measured as a 3.2 magnitude tremor and was barely felt by most.
At 11:29 p.m. a 4.1 magnitude quake was the one apparently felt by most as far away as Gilbert in the Southeast Valley.
In Fountain Hills and the Verdes some residents reported feeling the gentle shaking. USGS officials say that quake was about four miles deep.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and Fountain Hills Fire Department received no emergency reports resulting from the quake.
At 11:49 p.m. the last in the series was reported at a 4.0 magnitude. This one was believed to be about six miles below the surface.
While earthquakes in Arizona are rare they are not unheard of. The first recorded earthquake in the state occurred in January 1906, the same year as the quake that destroyed San Francisco.
The strongest quake in the state was a 5.6 magnitude near the Arizona/Utah border in 1959. During 2014 several smaller quakes were recorded in the state.
