Real victims

How appropriate that the first letter last week was a call for help to feed the hungry in our community by donating to our local food bank.

In the Sept. 8 Sunday edition of The Arizona Republic John Kavanagh, the Republican representative for District 23, posted an opinion letter chastising the federal government for accepting a non-prosecution agreement with Bashas’ regarding a food-labeling deception.

The issue was with their Kobe ground beef and other prime grade meat. For those of you have never purchased these meats, they average $25 a pound.

The meat of John Kavanagh’s argument was that the US Attorney had accepted an agreement with Bashas’ that sets the penalty as a donation of $1.4 million to our area food banks. Mr. Kavanagh believes this is totally unacceptable and that the penalty should be that Bashas’ must sell prime meat at a lower price for the victims who purchased the meat.

Really, he considers people who paid $25 a pound for meat, while children, seniors, disabled Americans and others in our community go hungry, victims?

With the US House of Representatives cutting billions from our nation’s food stamp program, maybe he believes we should re-establish the poor houses and orphanages where children can beg “Please sir may I have some more food.”

Mr. Kavanagh maybe you should try feeding a family of four on $375 every month. Anyone who is paying $25 a pound for meat has nothing to complain about nor do they have any right to call themselves victims of anything but greed.
