Since 2010, the Association for Foster and Adoptive Parents has distributed more than 12,000 bikes to children in need. Noon Kiwanis of Fountain Hills has contributed to the project for several years and has delivered more than 70 refurbished bikes per year. They have also made cash contributions to purchase helmets.
Noon Kiwanis of Fountain Hills embraces programs working with foster children and puts on three bicycle riding safety classes for elementary students each year. The group also supports other groups that focus on young children and family needs, like Reigning Grace Ranch and Foster Your Future.
Each year, the Association for Foster and Adoptive Parents sets up the temporary warehouse in a different location around the valley. Noon Kiwanis members said as many as 150 volunteers are needed to handle the influx of repairs and distributions, and they welcome help from any other groups or individuals.
First time volunteers are asked to attend an orientation class the morning of their first volunteer day. After the bikes are unloaded on the first day, volunteers will be able to sign up for power washing/cleaning, light mechanical work, heavy mechanical work, detailing, and “where needed.”
Volunteers will be provided with a light lunch. Visit recycleyourbicycleaz.com to learn more and to sign up to volunteer.
