Red Ribbon Week is back in Fountain Hills. Fountain Hills Coalition leadership said it is proud to host and work with other organizations to help teach Fountain Hills students the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

The theme for this year's Red Ribbon Week is "life is a movie, film drug free." Program manager Shawn Uphoff outlined the importance and motives behind Red Ribbon Week.

“We want our message of being drug free and healthy to reach every corner of this community,” Uphoff said. “Inspiring students to avoid those harmful substances and focus more on their education to help better their future is our main goal.”

The Fountain Hills Community Foundation delivered a big helping hand after sending a grant of $5,000 to help fund the event and bring vendors to the occasion. Spirit Week, an awareness walk, pledging, door decorating, tulip planting, and an Educational Health Fair for parents and students are among the events that take place during the week.

“There are going to be so many enjoyable activities taking place during the week,” Uphoff said. “The Little Falcons will receive Halloween treat bags and they’re going to wear red. McDowell Mountain Elementary School will start their week with a Red Ribbon Walk, plant promise tulips and door decorating competition. Middle School will also have a door decorating contest and host an educational health fair. High School students will wear red and have a PSA video contest. The Inspiration Academy will also be participating in the festivities.”

The PSA video contest is important because participants will have a chance to win $500 and will have their video shown to the younger students. The PSA video will be an example and guide for the younger generation to learn more about avoiding drugs and other harmful substances.

Vendors will be featured at these events, and various organizations will be present to help push the main motivation of staying clean. K-Kids, DEA, National Guard, and Iron Roots will have vendors for students to learn more about the importance of Red Ribbon Week. Uphoff said, “We want students to know more about the importance of avoiding drugs and focusing on the right aspects to live a long and healthy life.”Red Ribbon Walk is the nation’s longest and oldest drug prevention campaign. The Coalition and the Fountain Hills Community Foundation want to make this week enjoyable for kids and teach them valuable life lessons.
