Remembrance

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, also referred to as Pearl Harbor Day, is a holiday observed annually on Dec. 7 in the United States of America. It is a day dedicated to honoring and remembering the 2,403 victims who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii, during World War II on Dec. 7, 1941.

Although Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is not a federal holiday, it is still a significant day in American and World War II history. There was a ceremony at the Fountain Hills Veterans Memorial (10:45-11:45 a.m.), to pay tribute to those who gave their lives serving our country 75 years ago.

In attendance were seven World War II veterans; it was an honor to see them. The VFW Post #7507 Commander delivered a keynote address that took those in attendance back to Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands on Dec. 7, 1941. Additionally, Jack Fedor led a flyover with a missing man formation over those at the ceremony.

What most annoys me is that there were only about 100 people who made the effort to remember and attend. It appears that most people have already forgotten, and don’t seem to care. I can understand those that are working, as this was on a Wednesday morning, but what about the rest of you? Too busy? At Starbucks? Shopping? Or just laying around at home?

Hopefully, next year’s attendance will be greater.
