Last Tuesday Ann and I attended an Islamic Forum sponsored by the Fountain Hills Interfaith Alliance.
The three people sitting at the front table fielding questions from the audience were knowledgeable, articulate, humorous and calm. One questioner wondered if they were truly representative of Islam considering what appeared to be their “moderate” positions. It was an obvious prejudicial comment.
As in discussions regarding Christianity and the Bible, the out of context was utilized by some attendees in an attempt to make a negative point regarding Islam.

Panel members agreed there are bad people out there who say they are acting in accordance with Islamic teachings. However, and this is a BIG however, their actions are in direct conflict with the beliefs of millions of Muslims who practice their faith with kindness, compassion and mercy as called for in the Koran.
Just like the followers of other religions, Muslims living in this country want to be good citizens observing the laws and societal structure that has made this country great. They are us!
As we were leaving (after the panelists were given a standing ovation), we noticed two Sheriff’s deputies standing by the church entrance.
Arriving home we looked on The Fountains UMC website and read some not so nice comments regarding the forum such as “You have let the Devil into your home,” which sounds eerily like a quote from The Salem Witch Trials. I can see why the police were present.
Over the centuries this nation has built a well-deserved and honest reputation for accepting and supporting people from all walks of life and religious beliefs and ethnic backgrounds. The term “melting pot” has real meaning.
People of the Islamic faith are our neighbors and we should respect them as we would have others respect us.
