Responding to letter on Toth and Turning Point Action

I was astonished by a letter in the Times Independent by Eric Landau (“Councilwoman Toth’s connection to Turning Point Action is concerning”) that condemned her for merely participating in a conservative group.

Turning Point Action (TPA) is a traditional political get-out-the-vote operation that is directed at registering voters, supporting local elections and running for office. You don’t get any more American than that! But Mr. Landau seems to think that TPA is the modern incarnation of the Nazi party. He goes on to demand that Ms. Toth “must either resign from TPA or from the council” based on some undefined ethical imperative. Mr. Landau presents an angry reaction against Toth exercising her fundamental First Amendment rights.

One can sense a visceral hatred unleashed when Mr. Landau rants that Turning Point was “founded by right-wing extremist Charlie Kirk.” What is a “right-wing extremist” anyway? Is it somebody who is pro-American? Charlie Kirk is simply a passionate advocate for Conservative values and free speech, dedicated to engaging and empowering young Americans to promote and uphold principles of freedom, liberty and limited government. I have followed Charlie for years. I love the guy. Does that make me a “right-wing extremist,” too? Just curious.

I think I know where this opposition comes from. Mr. Kirk is a straight, white, conservative, Christian male who upholds traditional American values. That includes me and half of the people of Fountain Hills (including the women!). So why do you oppose us, Mr. Landau? Why do you oppose our country? Why do you oppose our constitutional right to freedom of speech and freedom of assembly? Such opposition against fundamental American values is indefensible and does not belong in Fountain Hills. You owe Ms. Toth an apology.
