The Fountain Hills Theater opened this weekend with “Ring of Fire.” It is the life of the great Johnny Cash, told through his music.
Okay, Fountain Hills, listen up: Run, don’t walk, and get your tickets. This play is on until Aug. 26. Another example of why I keep telling you we have the best little theater in the Valley. Trust me, don’t miss this one.

This was the country music I grew up enjoying and before Nashville took a different turn; just saying. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson; the Highway Men were the real deal. I’m just a country girl, raised in Missouri and as the song says, I was country when country wasn’t cool. Along with Merle Haggard, these were the giants of country music. If this is your music, this musical is for you. It starts with “Country Boy” and ends with “A Boy Named Sue.” Sing along, foot-stomping fun and a song called “Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart,” this will make your day. In true country form, it also deals with the heartache in his life.
The cast of “Ring of Fire” is simply terrific, including Dave Lopez, Tom Mangum, Jay Melberg, Ukiah Odom, Tanya Schoenwolf and Lesle St. John. Directed by the great Peter J. Hill, this play is a must see. Lots of us remember growing up with this music. If not, rent “Walk the Line” and learn more about this Man in Black.
