Rodeo Drive

Councilman Tolis still can’t get his fingers on the pulse of the citizens of our town. If he had read all the opinion letters and ads against the town tax, he would know that none of them were opposed to the amount. We were against any amount of a town property tax.

I would have thought by now he would have gotten the message from the majority of our citizens that we don’t want to be a “tourist magnet town.”

Let’s look at his Rodeo Drive idea. Being that all that is left in Plat 208 are small, scattered lots, I guess he could propose “eminent domain” on all the stores on the north side of the Avenue of the Fountains. Then he could have our town’s economic development manager contact Bulgari, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Chanel, Prada, Nordstrom and of course Harry Winston for some $10 million diamonds. How about House of Bijan? That’s the store that has a yellow Rolls Royce parked in front of it with the parking meter painted yellow.

Next, I’m sure the Four Seasons Hotel will build a five-star hotel for those very rich people to stay in. Fashion Square, watch out. Your underground parking lots and fully air-conditioned mall will empty out fast when they hear about our hot, no-cover parking lots.

Those who want to open a business in a new town usually check out its demographics. Learn the age statistics and population, and visit with the Chamber of Commerce. Next, the Town Hall for license, taxes, zoning and codes.

We already have a very special downtown area; our fountain, lake and park. It’s our trademark, our very identity. We do not want an aquatic center money pit, crystal lagoon, or any tourist magnet scheme. Good council members listen to their constituents.
