Ruth Martin, a long-time resident of Fountain Hills, died on Saturday, July 30, 2016. Ruth was born Oct. 6, 1933 in West Lawn, Pa. The third child of John and Adella Sebastian, she had an older sister and brother, Betty Lou and Richard.
She attended West Lawn public schools and graduated from Wilson High School, in West Lawn, in 1951. She attended Drexel University and graduated in 1955.
Ruth married the late William Martin in August 1955 and they settled in the Philadelphia area. Ruth worked in interior design for several years in Philadelphia until the arrival of two children after which she worked as a homemaker raising her family.
The family moved several times between the Philadelphia area, upstate New York and New Jersey before settling in Deerfield, Ill. in 1973.
Ruth first visited Fountain Hills in 1990, and came back every year thereafter, staying a little longer every year until becoming a 12-month resident in 2010.
In Fountain Hills she was active in the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church and the Fountain Hills Senior Center, volunteered at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale and was a supporter of civic organizations in Fountain Hills. Ruth most recently resided at Fountain View Village, and remained involved in its activities.
Ruth will be most remembered for being always willing to help most anyone, with any need, as much as she could, and to include some words of well-considered advice from her wealth of experience.
Ruth is survived by two sons, Brad, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Andy, of Broomfield, Colo.; a daughter-in-law, Joan, of Broomfield, Colo.; two nieces, Julie, of Scott, N.Y. and Michelle of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four grandchildren, Jillian, of Broomfield, Colo., Joseph, of The Bronx, N.Y., Steven, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Brandon, of Metuchen, N.J.; and two great grandchildren, Brianna and JoLee of The Bronx, N.Y.
Services will be held at the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church on Thursday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, gifts should be made to the Extended Hands Food Bank of Fountain Hills.
