It’s good news for Fountain Hills and its citizens that Randy Roberts was named fire chief.
Chief Roberts has done an impeccable job as assistant chief and fire marshal for our town since he was hired in 2007. He had been working side-by-side with the late Fire Chief Scott LaGreca that entire time, learning not only from the “University of LaGreca” but from the community of Fountain Hills.
The affable Roberts at first blush might not come across as a guy who would bust his way into a burning house on fire, but his resume would belie that impression.

Roberts, much like LaGreca, is no stranger to fire service, having attained the rank of captain with the Phoenix Fire Department, retiring after 29 years with that organization. He has a broad understanding of fire prevention, fire codes, emergency medical services and fighting fires.
Roberts also has training in large-scale disaster management, something that might come in handy if this area ever experiences another disaster like the Rio Fire, which changed our local landscape 18 years ago.
Roberts has been entrenched in our community for many years, first as a resident and more lately as a Rural/Metro employee who works under contract with the Town of Fountain Hills.
Chief LaGreca left big boots to fill with his passing, but maybe one of the only guys who could fit into them would be Randy Roberts.
So it came as no surprise that Town Manager Ken Buchanan didn’t need to interview other candidates for the position. Chief Roberts wanted the job, and he certainly deserved it. Welcome aboard, Randy, because we’re glad you’re staying aboard.
