The shootings began south of Shea Boulevard around 8:30 Tuesday night. After fleeing the scene, the gunman carjacked a patron at the Ba’ja convenience store across from Fort McDowell Casino before heading north on the highway. He later abandoned the car in a ditch.
Three hours later, Mesa Police Department’s helicopter found Walker lying on the ground in a fetal position. A SWAT team took him into custody. Outside the stolen car, troopers found an AR-15 rifle, numerous magazines of ammunition and body armor. The highway was closed for more than five hours.
