Saving lives

When one works on a church committee, things are typically accomplished slowly. I found the exception to the rule at The Fountains UMC. We held our first chili supper Jan. 12. Due to members moving, illnesses and the closeness to holidays, many churches would have just given up.

But The Fountains is a church where if someone sees something that needs to be done, they do it. Therefore, a chili supper that had six entries grew to 17 in less than a week.

Phil Rodakis of Phil’s Filling Station stepped quickly into judging 17 chilis instead of six with grace and gave great feedback for next year’s event.

Chili judge’s award was a three-way tie with Denise Schlum, Carolyn LaForest and Linda Osborn. Chili ranging from elk, wild turkey, white and chocolate gave tasters quite a challenge. People’s Choice went to Nancy Enmark, first; Carolyn LaForest, second; and Angela Swetnam, third.

I would love to name all the entries and all the people who helped, but that would fill your paper. It is so great to work with people who take on large challenges and complete them while serving others.

A special thanks to DeDe Rudolphy who did final planning while on vacation and takes on all challenges with grace. To Rev. David Felten and David James -- who juggle many duties and were instrumental to pulling things together.

To youths Tiger and Lucas Elwood and Eri Albanian guided by their awesome leader, Jennifer Graham, who stepped up to help in so many ways. To Carol Goode whose name is so appropriate for running the kitchen.

It was good to see people who do not attend our church to come and enjoy the fun. By raising over $1100 for “Imagine No Malaria,” we are able to save 110 lives while having fun. Look for a bigger and better chili cook off next year.
