School Board authorizes major election

Fountain Hills voters will have additional financial questions to answer when they fill out their mail-in ballots this fall.
The School Board voted 4-0 this evening, June 12, to place two questions on the Nov. 5 ballot -- an $8 million bond authorization and a combined maintenance and operations override question.
This comes on top of the anticipated Town of Fountain Hills bond issue authorization in the neighborhood of $8 million that will be before voters Nov. 5. The town is seeking funds to totally re-do Saguaro Boulevard.
FHUSD Superintendent Tom Lawrence said a consultant hired by the district polled more than 300 voters back in May, and a majority of those responding (44 percent) said they would vote for the two school questions and the town road bond.
The School District would use the bond money for campus improvements and renovations, buses, technology updates, more energy efficient heating and cooling systems and the like. The override money would be used for operating funds to help with salaries, teacher retention, pay for full-day kindergarten and similar items. If approved by voters in November, the override would simply extend current override authorizations in a few years and not raise taxes beyond the current level, school officials stressed. There would be secondary tax rate increases associated with the bond approval.
