School board meets tonight

It’s going to be a busy night for the Fountain Hills Unified School District Governing Board, with plenty of policies and extracurricular trip proposals flanked by reports from administration and intergovernmental agreements. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the District Learning Center tonight, Aug. 24.

Tonight’s agenda begins with a pair of reports, the first of which will be the annual audit report from Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations, Dr. Robert Allen. That will be followed by a report on the AZMerit test results from Dr. Patrick Sweeney, giving the board a rough idea of how local students fared on the new standardized test.

Loads of policies will be on tonight’s agenda, nine of which have been rolled into the consent agenda. While the board may wish to pull out and discuss a policy revision individually, grouping them like this allows for a single vote to move passage along quickly.

Another big part of the evening’s agenda will be extracurricular trips. Various groups are asking the Board to consider sending students to locations both in-state and out of country, with five such trips to be discussed.

Only a discussion item will be a trip for the seventh grade Star Gazers, who hope to go to AstroCamp in October. A vote on this item will come at the next meeting.

On the action agenda, though, the board is considering a pair of trips for the Sister Cities Club. The first is to Sedona, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon in October, with the second set in Dierdorf, Germany, and Zamosch, Poland following the 2017 graduation.

The board is also considering a cross country trip to Costa Mesa, Cali. For a meet later this season, with the high school Photography/Art Club shooting for a trip to Italy in October.

Outside of all of those trips, the board will consider a possible cell tower extension agreement with the folks at Crown Castle, with a pair of intergovernmental agreements only currently up for discussion. The board will talk about partnering with Pima JTED for training lesson plans and curriculum for CTE, as well as a possible partnership with the Paradise Valley School District for online curriculum.
