The Town Council voted unanimously (7-0) at its regular session on April 17 to recognize former Fountain Hills Mayor Sharon Morgan by naming a portion of Avenue of the Fountains Plaza for her.
Morgan was elected the town’s first female mayor in 1998 and served a total of four years after being re-elected in 2000.
Upon moving to Fountain Hills in 1989, Morgan began her series of “firsts” in the town. She was among the founders of the first Welcome Wagon Club in the community and became its first president.
Working with the Chamber of Commerce for 29 years she has organized and grown the signature Fountain Festival and Great Fair into nationally renowned events with more than 500 artists per show, and drawing thousands of visitors for each event.
During her time as mayor, Morgan championed many initiatives including the Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve, development of the Cutillo Plaza municipal complex, which includes the Community Center, Town Hall and Library/Museum.
Morgan was also instrumental in forming the local Sister Cities organization and bringing into the fold the four international Sister Cities of Fountain Hills.
Sharon Morgan Plaza is at the far east end of Avenue of the Fountains at Saguaro Boulevard, including the fountains and Rotary clock extending as far west as the turn lane through the median.
Morgan told the council she is “very honored” to be recognized by the town in this manner.
A plaque with Morgan’s name will be attached to features at the plaza and dedicated at a later date.
The council has decided to segment the Avenue Plaza with six distinct areas that can be named in honor of citizens who have made a significant contribution to the town.
