Siblings spread kindness at Extended Hands Food Bank in Fountain Hills

Young heroes carry on family tradition of compassion and service

On an early Monday morning, four little hands move nimbly through boxes, sorting food items at the Extended Hands Food Bank in Fountain Hills.

Dressed in adult-sized, bright blue volunteer shirts - brother and sister Sylas (11) and Roxy (8) separate canned goods from the macaroni and cheese like it’s second nature - the same way their mom Amy Ashley did when she was a child.

“My dad (Tom Carlson) used to take me to the Paz de Cristo in Mesa and St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix,” Ashley said, whose childhood memories are filled with times spent at the food pantry with her dad, spreading kindness and meeting folks she wouldn’t typically run into on a daily basis.
