Special engagement at Theater in July

The Arizona Young Actors Alliance (AYAA) will perform its first full-length production in Fountain Hills.

She Kills Monsters is a daring comedy by Qui Nguyen which tells the story of Agnes Evans, following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s “Dungeons & Dragons” notebook, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. Laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres and 1990s pop culture, She Kills Monsters is called a “high octane dramatic comedy.”

Mackenna Goodrich, the originator of AYAA, said the play features 14 cast members from around the valley, including Fountain Hills. Goodrich started AYAA two years ago to provide a forum for young actors to communicate about their work and various theater activities in the area. She said she has more than 500 Facebook “Likes” and just surpassed 100,000 page views.

“It really has taken off,” Goodrich said. “It’s exciting.”

While She Kills Monsters may not appeal to every audience, Goodrich said it is “very accessible.”

The “Dungeons & Dragons” game is explained so those who are not familiar with role-playing activity popular with young people have an idea about how it works.

AYAA has performed Cabaret-style productions in Gilbert, Chandler and Fountain Hills.

Suzu Henderson, executive director of Fountain Hills Theater said she and Goodrich discussed the full-length She Kills Monsters last November.

“This show brings a new opportunity to the community while maintaining the mission of our efforts,” Henderson said.

She said the show is “controversial” in that it may not appeal to the theater’s core audience, but it gives the theater a way to reach out to other types of patrons.

“It is cutting edge,” Henderson said. “And to some people it will seem controversial, but to others it won’t resonate that way at all. We want to reach those people, too.”

Henderson told Goodrich when they began speaking about the production that an age advisory needed to be included in publicity.

“There are two versions of the production,” Henderson said. “We chose the more scaled down one.”

But the show comes with a rating of PG13 for strong language, mild adult themes and brief sexual situations.

Goodrich, who is 19 and a sophomore at Kenyon College in Ohio, said she didn’t think people her age would consider the play controversial.

“But it could be troubling for some people,” she said. “We just hope to bring a different type of play to Fountain Hills.”

Henderson said the theater has the rest of the new season ready to go, with the continuation of Midsummer Dreamin’ through July 30, the opening of Leaving Iowa on Mainstage Too Aug. 11, Chicago on Mainstage Sept. 1 and the youth theater opening its production Seussical Junior Sept. 22.

“It is a great lineup,” Henderson said. “We’re looking forward to a great year.”
