I just attended a moving memorial service for a most special person, Chief Scott LaGreca. During the tribute, I recalled my memories and thoughts of our understated outstanding public servant and what I would say to him if I could…it would go something like this…

Dear Scott --

I’m at a loss for words as I ponder how to adequately express my appreciation, admiration and respect for the job you’ve done the last 17 years. You didn’t just “do a job”…you infused the position and department with experience, knowledge, respect, stability and trust.

Dear Scott --

I’m at a loss for words as I ponder how to adequately express my appreciation, admiration and respect for the job you’ve done the last 17 years. You didn’t just “do a job”…you infused the position and department with experience, knowledge, respect, stability and trust.

As town employee and council person I always felt if I heard it from Scott, I could “take it to the bank.”

I’ve long kidded you about always getting what you requested in the budget but there’s a reason…you wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t needed, plus people trust your judgment and motivation to do what’s best for our community. Your word and recommendations were always above reproach.

It seems like you’ve been the “face” of the Fire Department forever and hard to imagine meetings and “emergencies” without your calm, controlled, knowledgeable, confident and unflappable demeanor.

You were steady at the helm when the transition took place and worked so well with Steve on the comprehensive public safety concept. How many communities benefit from the lifelong experiences of two such individuals?

A member of the Scott fan club, I’ve never had more confidence and respect for anyone that I worked with in the public sector than you.

While looking for just the right card for you, I found the following quote: “The most beautiful stones have been tossed by the wind and washed by the water and polished to brilliance by life’s strongest storms.”

You are polished to brilliance my friend. Thank you so very much…
