Matthew Community is a non-denominational group that involves itself in issues of justice, peace and resourcing of volunteer opportunities on a local, regional and global level.

Some typical issues of involvement may include hunger, poverty and human rights.

Matthew Community is based on the New Testament in which Christ instructs followers to serve the hungry, thirsty, prisoners, the naked and the ill.

Some projects include Weekender Bag Project that provides nutritious food bags for children who have little or no food on the weekends; White-Out drive for Sunshine Acres, a care facility housing children of incarcerated parents; assistance to the Starbright Organization; and other projects.

This is an ecumenical effort, and the group invites all the church congregations to become a part of this endeavor.

“We are a task force to research and resource ideas how to best serve our brothers and sisters across denominations and theologies,” said Leann Gratz.

“There are many issues waiting for compassionate assistance.”

The Aug. 10 meeting will start at 9 a.m. in the hall at Church of the Ascension, 12615 Fountain Hills Blvd.

For further information, call Leann Gratz, 837-1066.
