Stephen Ministry is Christ caring for people through people.

Local organizers say it is a caring ministry that helps hurting individuals receive Christian love and support through one-on-one caring relationships.

In 2011, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and Fountain Hills Christian Center began a partnership to train members of their congregations to become Stephen Ministers.

On April 4, eight new Stephen Ministers were commissioned. They were Sue Bye, Sherrie Hottenstein, Denny Tam, Eileen Doench, Jill Plattner and John Strayer from SOTH, and Kimberly Dorney and Doreen Thayer from FHCC.

The new class received 50 hours of caregiving training to minister to people experiencing a crisis, facing a challenge or simply going through a tough time.

“Everyone goes through difficult times, but sometimes people really struggle with their trials,” said Steve Bergeson, SOTH pastor.

“Sometimes we need to know that someone else cares, is praying for us, and reaching out to us.”

The ministry follows the example of the Biblical Stephen, who was sent by Christ’s apostles to minister to believers.

Stephen Ministry is a confidential ministry; those receiving care can be sure their identity and personal details will remain private.
