Street sweeping goes contract

Posted

Beginning with the new fiscal year on July 1, the Town of Fountain Hills will contract for street sweeping services.

The Town Council has approved a $75,000 one-year agreement with C&S Sweeping Services to do street sweeping in Fountain Hills through the next fiscal year.

The town eliminated the operation of its own sweepers to save money that is now allotted to the pavement management program.

The agreement extends the cooperative purchase agreement between C&S and Maricopa County to the town.

Arterial streets will be swept every two weeks and residential streets will be on an eight-week schedule. This maintains the same level of sweeping as has been done in the past.

The contract will also provide for emergency services and storm clean up, and it will include reporting data for the town storm water and air quality permits.

The one-year agreement allows for four successive renewals. The savings amounts to about $50,000 per year.

Staff reported that if street sweeping were to remain an in-house service it would require an additional employee and the purchase of new equipment within two to three years. The town has two sweepers and it would cost about $175,000 each to replace them.
