Freshman Grace Clark swam in the 200 individual medley on Nov. 2. Clark did incredibly well in her event, jumping up the ranks two places from 24 to 22.
Unfortunately, Clark’s time was not enough to qualify her for the final day of state but, as head coach Patti Schultz said, “A freshman quantifying for state is a great feat.”
The other Fountain Hills swimmer to compete in the 200 individual was Kennedy Muhs. Muhs finished 12th on Nov. 2, which was enough to qualify for finals the next day. As Schultz explains, this made things a little hectic.
“Saturday started out crazy for senior Kennedy Muhs,” Schultz said. “She hopped in the pool for a pre-meet workout with Coach, then changed and went to the band competition. As a member of the FHHS band, she competed at 1:45 p.m. at the state band competition, jumped in the car and raced over to the pool and raced at 3:06 p.m. in the 200 individual medley.”
Even with the time crunch Muhs was able to drop three seconds off her race, finishing in eighth place in the state.
Muhs then went on to compete in the 500 freestyle and finished with a time quick enough to net her fifth overall.
The final event that FHHS competed in was the 400 freestyle relay. FHHS’ team consisted of both Muhs and Clark, as well as Annika Clark and Erin Morley.
The relay team finished with a time of 4:08:68, securing 15th place.
